Peter Benchley’s Jaws drew on a 1964 article about shark hunter Frank Mundus and a fascination with a mega-sized shark, laying the groundwork for the novel. Although he later denied the 1916 Jersey attacks as the direct inspiration, Benchley acknowledged parallels to the events and a 2001 New York Times correction clarified the confusion.
