Ali G Return Sparks U.K. Boycott Campaign and Racial Caricature Debate
Sacha Baron Cohen’s return as Ali G in the upcoming film 'Ali G: Who Iz I?' has triggered a significant backlash in the U.K., with activists launching a campaign to prevent the movie from being screened in cinemas. While pop star Ed Sheeran welcomed being mocked in the trailer as an honor, critics and cultural figures argue the character is an outdated and racist caricature of Jamaican and Black British culture. The controversy centers on the character's styling and dialogue, which some view as offensive rather than satirical, despite Cohen’s intent to parody cultural appropriation.
