Home Affordability Challenges Persist in 2023, Despite Price Decreases and Regional Variations
According to a report by real estate brokerage Redfin, only 15.5% of homes listed for sale in the US in 2023 were affordable for the typical household, a decrease from the previous year. The National Association of Realtors and real estate data provider ATTOM also highlighted the affordability challenges faced by middle-income households. The shortage of homes for sale and a surge in mortgage rates contributed to the affordability issues. However, there is some hope for improvement in 2024, as housing inventory has increased and mortgage rates are slowly dropping.
