NHTSA Probes Nearly 1 Million GM L87 V-8 Vehicles Over Post-Repair Engine Failures
The NHTSA has opened an engineering analysis into up to 997,743 GM vehicles powered by the 6.2L L87 V-8 after 499 reports of post-remedy engine failures following Recall 25V-274, spanning 2021–2026 models such as the Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Escalade, Sierra and Yukon. ODI expanded the investigation to engines built from March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024 and GM’s oil-viscosity change or engine replacement remedies appear not to have fully resolved the issue, signaling a broader safety probe that could influence GM’s future use of the L87 engine in its top-selling trucks and SUVs.
