I-95 Collapse Highlights Vulnerability of US Roads.

Recycled glass will be used to fill in the hole on I-95 in North Philadelphia caused by a tanker truck fire that damaged overpasses. The glass aggregate will support a temporary roadway until permanent structures can be built. The fill is 2,000 tons of lightweight recycled glass nuggets, which is being used to avoid delays due to supply chain issues by using other materials. Once the backfill work is complete, traffic can return to I-95 while crews work to rebuild a permanent bridge while keeping six lanes of traffic flowing at all times.

Pennsylvania's I-95 Collapse: Rebuilding with Recycled Glass Nuggets.

Pennsylvania will use 2,000 tons of recycled glass nuggets to fill in the collapsed section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, avoiding supply-chain delays for other materials. Crews will work 24/7 to reopen the critical commercial artery, but officials declined to estimate how long it will take. The Biden administration has pledged aid as the collapse snarls traffic in Philadelphia. The glass nuggets are produced by AeroAggregates of North America, which mills glass bottles and jars diverted from landfills into a powder and heats it into a foam to produce small, lightweight nuggets that are gray and look like rocks.
