Due to the extreme violence and insecurity in Haiti, demand for flights out of the country is high, resulting in one-way ticket prices that are 8 to 24 times more expensive than tickets to Haiti. American Airlines has downgraded its Miami service and reduced the number of flights to Port-au-Prince. Other airlines have no seats available for the next few weeks. The economic divergence between Haiti and the Dominican Republic suggests that Haiti's problems are home-grown, including massive corruption. Savvy travelers can take regional flights to the Dominican Republic or Providenciales in Turks and Caicos to fly to Miami at a lower cost.
