Lithuania Identifies Over 1000 Belarusians and Russians as Security Threats
Lithuania has declared over 1,000 citizens of Russia and Belarus residing in the country as threats to national security and is revoking their permanent residency permits. The decision was based on a questionnaire that asked about their views on Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the status of Crimea. Lithuania, a NATO and EU member, has been a supporter of Ukraine and a refuge for those fleeing repression in Belarus and Russia. The Migration Department identified 910 Belarusian citizens and 254 Russian citizens as security risks. The affected individuals can appeal the decision or have a month to leave the country. Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya expressed concern for innocent people affected by the decision, while some residents supported the move, citing concerns about Kremlin propaganda.
