Bipartisan Social Security reform talks derailed by accusations of lies.
Behind-the-scenes talks between the White House and lawmakers on Social Security reform have been ongoing for months, but were overshadowed by a Republican senator's accusation that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had lied during a Senate Finance Committee hearing. Senators Bill Cassidy and Angus King are leading a bipartisan effort to address Social Security underfunding, including the creation of a second trust fund that would allow money to be invested in the stock market. Democrats in Congress are also devising a rescue plan, with Representative John Larson set to unveil a bill that would increase benefits across-the-board.
