Bryson DeChambeau led a players-only LIV Golf meeting amid funding uncertainty after the Saudi PIF pulled support, with the Team Championship possibly being canceled and the league's future in question. Players are awaiting a clearer reboot plan in the next few weeks, and while some could consider returning to the PGA Tour, those defections would face financial restrictions under LIV’s Returning Member Program.
Amid LIV Golf’s uncertain future, Rex Hoggard warned that if LIV folds, top stars like Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau may have to rebuild PGA Tour status via Q School, the DP World Tour, or the Korn Ferry Tour, with the Returning Member Program offering a very narrow path. Rahm’s LIV victory in Mexico City underscores potential audience benefits for the Tour, but a second restart for LIV players could be contentious and challenging, highlighting a potential major complication for the PGA Tour if LIV collapses.
Golf legend Tom Watson criticized the PGA Tour for breaking its promise to ban LIV Golf players as Brooks Koepka returns under a Returning Member Program with conditions (a $5 million charity fine, restricted sponsor invites, and a five-year limit on the Equity program). He argues LIV defectors violated sponsor protections and should have faced a longer ban, while Patrick Reed’s path back is different and could yield full PGA Tour status in 2027 if he meets the DP World Tour criteria.
The PGA Tour moved quickly to reinstate Patrick Reed by aligning his return with the tour’s Returning Member Program, echoing a precedent set for Brooks Koepka, as Reed plans to play the DP World Tour this season before rejoining the PGA Tour as a past champion in 2027, signaling a clearer reintegration path for former LIV players and stirring mixed reactions among players at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Patrick Reed announced plans to return to the PGA TOUR later this year and pursue reinstatement for the 2027 season after resigning his TOUR membership following an unauthorized event in 2025. He would return as a non-member in 2026 and could compete in FedExCup Fall events before potentially reinstating to the past-champion category for 2027, while remaining an Honorary Lifetime Member on the DP World Tour. Reed sits No. 29 in the world rankings after winning the Dubai Desert Classic, but did not meet the Returning Member Program criteria, making Brooks Koepka the likely only player to return via that route.
Wyndham Clark voiced skepticism about Brooks Koepka's quick return to the PGA Tour via the Returning Member Program after leaving LIV, saying it's good for golf but frustrating that Koepka benefited from a blank-check deal and can “have the cake and eat it.” He notes the return comes with penalties including a $5 million charitable contribution, a five-year forfeiture of potential equity from the PGA Tour's Player Equity Program (estimated losses of $50–$85 million), no FedEx Cup bonus in 2026, and an obligation to earn his way into higher-purse events, and adds that many players would have taken similar paths, even if the arrangement is controversial.
LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil says he would have done the same as the PGA Tour in reinstating Brooks Koepka, emphasizing open pathways for players. Koepka exited LIV amicably and is returning to the PGA Tour under the Returning Member Program with penalties: a $5 million charitable fine, no sponsor exemptions to signature events, no FedEx Cup bonus this year, and five-year limits on equity grants; he remains PGA Tour exempt through 2028 due to his majors. O’Neil urges no holy war and says he wishes Koepka well, amid ongoing friction with the DP World Tour.
The PGA Tour launched a Returning Member Program offering an elite route back to the top level for players who have achieved elite performance, specifically those who won a major (The Players, Masters, PGA, U.S. Open, or The Open) between 2022 and 2025. Brooks Koepka has agreed to a five-year forfeiture of potential equity in the Tour’s Player Equity Program and a $5 million charitable contribution as part of the terms. Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Cameron Smith meet the criteria and have until Feb. 2 to decide on returning; Phil Mickelson does not meet the criteria. The move signals growing momentum for the PGA Tour over LIV amid ongoing questions about a merger and LIV’s future.)
With Brooks Koepka leaving LIV for the PGA Tour, Bryson DeChambeau’s long‑term future at LIV is under the lens. DeChambeau said at a season preview that he’s “contracted through 2026, so, excited about this year,” a quote LIV publicly flaunted, signaling no immediate pledge beyond this season. He also hinted at other paths, even joking about becoming a YouTube golfer if needed, and noted that long‑term deals must make sense for all parties. The piece frames DeChambeau as a linchpin for LIV’s stability while acknowledging his leverage and the possibility he could rejoin a returnable path under the Tour’s Returning Member Program.}
The PGA Tour unveiled an elite Returning Member Program to readmit select LIV Golf players (notably Brooks Koepka) and others with major or The Players wins since 2022, with a five-year equity hold for returnees, and Hudson Swafford calls the pathway a pragmatic step that could reshape how players move between tours.
Brooks Koepka will resume his PGA Tour career via a one-time Returning Member Program that imposes a $5 million charitable donation and bars equity gains and FedEx Cup bonuses for five years, while requiring him to earn his way into signature events; the program is limited to players who have won majors or The Players from 2022–2025, meaning Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith could return, with decisions due in three weeks. He will be exempt through 2028 based on his 2023 PGA Championship victory and will compete in the Farmers Insurance Open, though he cannot receive sponsor exemptions for the $20m signature events.
The PGA Tour has created a Returning Member Program to allow elite players like Brooks Koepka to rejoin after LIV Golf, with penalties including a $5 million charity contribution, no FedExCup money in 2026, no sponsor exemptions to big events, and no equity on the tour for five years. Koepka plans to return at the Farmers Insurance Open (Torrey Pines) on Jan. 29 and says he expects mixed receptions while needing to rebuild relationships with players hurt by his departure.
Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour under the Returning Member Program marks a turning point in the LIV vs. PGA Tour feud, signaling a strategic reassertion by the Tour as LIV’s disruption falters and its promise of a widely watched, innovative calendar fails to materialize.
Brooks Koepka will return to the PGA Tour this month via a one-time Returning Member Program that imposes heavy penalties (estimated $51-85 million) and temporarily blocks equity and FedEx Cup earnings; eligible LIV stars Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith must decide by Feb. 2, while Koepka can play full-field events starting with the Farmers Insurance Open (Jan. 29) and is committed to at least 15 events this year, with membership through 2028 and potential majors and playoffs depending on results; no sponsor exemptions and several other restrictions apply.
Brooks Koepka is returning to the PGA Tour five weeks after leaving LIV Golf, under a one-time Returning Member Program that imposes a $5 million charity donation and significant restrictions—no equity grants for five years, no FedEx Cup bonus money in 2026, and limited access to signature events unless earned—with plans to play the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines and a path back to major events through performance.
