Potential rabid bat prompts health guidance at Roger Williams Park Zoo

The Rhode Island Department of Health says a potentially rabid bat was seen in late August at Roger Williams Park Zoo’s water play area in Providence. The bat was discarded and officials consider the risk to visitors low. If you had contact with a bat at the zoo on or before Aug. 24, contact RIDOH for exposure assessment and possible treatment at 401-222-2577 (Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; 401-276-8046 after hours). Rabies treatment is most effective when started early, and vaccination can prevent rabies if exposure occurs.
