EU Implements Groundbreaking Regulations for Artificial Intelligence

The European Union (EU) is set to become the first major economic region to develop comprehensive regulations for artificial intelligence (AI). The EU's draft legislation aims to achieve comprehensible, transparent, fair, safe, and environmentally friendly AI. The regulations will categorize AI products into four risk classes: unacceptable risk, high risk, generative AI, and limited risk. Unacceptable AI applications, such as those that force people to change their behavior or divide people based on certain characteristics, will be banned. High-risk AI programs, including self-driving cars and medical technology, will require approval before entering the market. Generative AI products will be subject to transparency requirements, while low-risk AI programs will have minimal regulations. The draft law is expected to be formally approved by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers in April 2024, with member states having two years to transpose it into national law. However, critics argue that the proposal may over-regulate AI and lack ambition, potentially driving away European tech startups.
