MIT geologists have discovered that the sounds emitted by rocks can provide valuable information about their stability and depth. By subjecting samples of marble to different pressures, the researchers found that low pressures produced low-pitched "booms," while higher pressures generated higher-pitched crackles. These acoustic patterns can help identify unstable regions below the Earth's surface, aiding in earthquake and eruption predictions. The findings could also assist in drilling for geothermal energy and understanding the transition from brittle to ductile behavior in rocks. The research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
