FDA Approves New RSV Drug to Protect Infants and Young Children

The FDA has approved a new drug called Beyfortus for the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in babies and toddlers. RSV is a common cause of childhood illness and can lead to serious complications. Beyfortus, created by Sanofi and AstraZeneca, is a preventive drug that delivers long-acting antibodies to provide protection during RSV season. Clinical trials have shown that Beyfortus reduces the risk of RSV in infants and children by 70 to 75%. The drug is expected to be available in the U.S. before the 2023-2024 RSV season.
