Russian cyberattacks target US federal agencies, including Energy Department.
Russian malware has compromised the Department of Energy and other federal agencies as part of a global campaign of ransomware targeting government institutions. The government claims that the compromise is not severe and does not foresee long-term security risks. The attack has been attributed to the Clop ransomware group operating out of Russia, and it exploited a weakness with the "MOVEit" file transfer application. The U.S. government does not believe the compromise will have serious consequences and emphasizes that it is not a campaign like SolarWinds that presents a systemic risk to national security or the nation's networks.
