Fringe 2026 Sets Attendance Record but Faces Backlash Over Late Start
The 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe concluded with a record 2.8 million tickets sold, an 8% increase over last year. However, organizers face growing pressure to shift the festival dates earlier next year. While the event achieved its highest single-day attendance on August 15, performers and venues argue that the late start coincided with the return of Scottish schools, causing a significant drop in attendance during the final week. The Fringe Society rejected calls for an earlier start, citing the benefits of school holidays for families, but the debate highlights tensions between global appeal and local logistics.
