Video prompts assault charge for former Shelby officer who punched arrestee
A former Shelby Police Department officer, 22-year-old Karson Hyder, was charged with one count of assault inflicting serious injury after surveillance footage appeared to show him punching a Black woman during an arrest. Hyder turned himself in, posted a $10,000 secured bond, and was fired. The SBI investigation was prompted by the Shelby police chief and Cleveland County DA, and the case centers on an assault alleged by the arrestee, Cherrie Moore, who had asked for mental health care during the arrest.
