Baltic Sea Pipeline Damaged by Ship Anchor, Threats to Russia Unacceptable
Finnish police believe that a gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea was likely damaged by a ship dragging a large anchor along the seabed, but it is unclear whether it was accidental or intentional. Investigators have retrieved a lost anchor from the location of the pipeline rupture and are investigating whether it belongs to a Chinese container vessel. The incident has led to a disruption in gas supplies to Finland, and NATO has increased patrols in the Baltic Sea. In September 2022, similar deliberate acts of sabotage damaged the Nord Stream pipelines connecting Germany and Russia.
