Gun Registration and Past Convictions Raise Questions in Silver Rail Shooting Investigation
Investigators are determining if criminal charges will be filed against the mother of the Silver Rail Elementary shooter, whose name is identified as Shauntai May Nickerson. National outlets report the shotgun used in the attack was registered to her, though local authorities have not confirmed this. Nickerson previously pleaded guilty to a harassment charge, a violation that may have disqualified her from purchasing the weapon under Oregon law. The district is suspending classes at Silver Rail indefinitely while other schools resume on October 21. The case highlights ongoing legal battles over gun safety measures, specifically Measure 114, which is currently awaiting a ruling from the Oregon Supreme Court.
