Nighttime trips to the bathroom could hint at underlying health problems
Waking up more than once at night to urinate, known as nocturia, affects about half of adults over 50 and can signal underlying issues such as sleep disorders, diabetes, enlarged prostate, overactive bladder, or fluid buildup. Two or more nightly trips are linked to higher fall risk. A clinician should evaluate sudden changes and potential meds; meanwhile, limit fluids before bed, avoid alcohol late in the day, improve bedroom lighting, and consider sleep disorders like sleep apnea or restless legs as possible contributors.
