COVID-19's Impact on Child Abuse and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Kids
Experts initially predicted a surge in child abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased stress and social isolation, but reports of child abuse actually decreased significantly. Medical experts believe that pandemic-era supports, such as paid family leave and financial relief, may have protected vulnerable children. However, two years into the pandemic, child abuse cases started to climb again as these supports were ending. A study on abusive head trauma in children under 5 found a decrease in injuries during the pandemic, likely due to more women at home with children and financial relief reducing child poverty. Further research is needed to understand the reasons behind the decrease in child abuse during the pandemic and to develop effective policies to support families and prevent abuse.
