Eighteen-year-old violinist Sofia Demetriades has won the BBC Young Musician 2026 competition, marking the first all-female final in the event's 48-year history. Demetriades, a first-year undergraduate at the Royal Academy of Music, secured the victory with a performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. The prize includes a £3,000 cash award, recording opportunities with BBC ensembles, and career management support from the Young Classical Artists Trust. The final featured three contestants: Demetriades, 17-year-old recorder player Alma Nunez Debretzeni, and 18-year-old saxophonist Kezia Colton. Judges praised Demetriades for her technical mastery, musical sensitivity, and sophisticated stage presence, noting her performance was 'extraordinary' and full of 'poetry and maturity.'
