GM's Cruise Faces Major Setbacks and Safety Concerns as Robotaxi Operations Halted Nationwide
General Motors' autonomous vehicle subsidiary, Cruise, is reevaluating its robotaxi strategy after admitting a software fault in a gruesome crash. The incident, which occurred in San Francisco, revealed flaws in the car's software that inaccurately characterized the collision and caused the vehicle to drag the pedestrian along the ground. Cruise has recalled all 950 driverless vehicles in its fleet and plans to update the software before resuming operations. GM has also announced layoffs at Cruise and temporarily halted production of its purpose-built robotaxi vehicle. The company is facing pushback from regulators and emergency services departments in multiple cities, raising concerns about systemic flaws in its technology and communication.
