Cole’s rehab debut signals a hopeful Yankees return
Gerrit Cole returned to game action in his first rehab start since Tommy John surgery, delivering 4 1/3 innings for Double-A Somerset and topping 95–97 mph with sharp breaking stuff in a 9-8 win over the Phillies’ affiliate. He allowed three earned runs on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts, but he appeared healthy and encouraged, with the changeup and curveball praised by him and scouts. A next rehab start is planned in five to six days, possibly at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre or Somerset, as the Yankees monitor his progress toward a big-league return.
