South Korea's Strategy to Lead with Domestic AI Development
South Korea is investing about $390 million in a government-backed initiative to develop homegrown large language models through five local companies, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign AI tech and enhance national security. These companies, including LG AI Research, SK Telecom, Naver Cloud, and Upstage, are creating specialized AI models tailored to Korean language and culture, with plans for ongoing evaluation and improvement to compete with global giants like OpenAI and Google.
