Soviet Satellite Collides with Space Debris, Shatters in Orbit
A three-decade-old Soviet satellite, either the Kosmos-2143 or Kosmos-2145 spacecraft, has disintegrated in Earth's orbit, likely due to a collision with space debris. This incident highlights the growing concern of old objects accumulating in space and posing threats to functioning satellites. Researchers estimate that there are currently about 34,550 visible space debris fragments, along with millions of smaller objects, hurtling through space. The increasing amount of space junk raises concerns about the Kessler Syndrome, where orbital collisions generate more fragments and make Earth's orbit unusable.
