Standard Metagame Shifts After August Bans; Play Design Admits Vintage Error
Wizards of the Coast banned Badgermole Cub, Stormchaser's Talent, and Gran-Gran in Standard on August 10, 2026, while banning The Fantasticar in Legacy and restricting it in Vintage. These moves aim to rebalance formats dominated by fast mana and one-mana engines. The Standard format is expected to pivot toward Four-Color Control, Izzet Spellementals, Dimir Excruciator, and Mardu Discard. Play Design acknowledged the Vintage ban as a mistake, noting that The Fantasticar disrupted the metagame too quickly. Regional Championship Qualifiers begin this weekend, with the Pro Tour returning to Japan in 2027.
