Pasquale’s ‘Waiting for Lefty’ Revival Divides Critics Over Expanded Agitprop Format
Steven Pasquale’s directorial debut expands Clifford Odets’s 1935 agitprop play 'Waiting for Lefty' into a 75-minute Off-Broadway production at Classic Stage Company. The revival integrates original music by Yeller Tooth, choreography by Susan Misner, and historical protest songs to frame a cab drivers’ union strike. While the production aims to connect Depression-era labor struggles to modern economic disparities, critics are split on whether the added elements enhance the drama or dilute its impact. The show runs through November 29, 2026.
