Brown County Fair officials say none of the fair’s horses have been exposed to Strangles, even though neighboring counties have reported cases, with ongoing monitoring and emphasis on vaccination and biosecurity to prevent spread.
Two additional cases of strangles have been confirmed in Kentucky, with the potential for the outbreak to reach Keeneland Race Course and a private training facility in Fayette County. The affected horses have been isolated and are being monitored daily for any signs of illness. Strangles is a highly infectious upper respiratory disease caused by Streptococcus equi subsp equi and is spread from horse to horse through direct contact or contaminated surfaces.
