Grief- and stress-triggered heart syndrome explained

After a Shreveport mass shooting killed eight children, families confront broken heart syndrome (Takotsubo cardiomyopathy), a stress-related heart condition that can weaken the heart and mimic a heart attack. About 200,000 adults were hospitalized for it from 2016–2020; risk is highest for postmenopausal women and those with mental health issues, though men can also die from it. Triggers range from severe physical or emotional stress to events with no identifiable trigger. Symptoms resemble heart attack and require hospital evaluation; mortality was about 6.5% in that period, with major complications possible, but most patients recover with treatment and there’s no proven prevention.
