Three more subcontractors filed mechanics liens totaling about $900,000 against the Obama Presidential Center’s Home Court facility for structural steel, excavation/concrete and gym flooring work, adding to a broader payment dispute that already included a nearly $4 million claim by Adamson Plumbing and highlighted ongoing cost overruns and contracting challenges around the center’s opening.
UPS and the Teamsters union have agreed on 55 noneconomic issues in their contract negotiations, including installing air conditioners in package cars and limiting drivers to a maximum of 60 hours over a 70-hour workweek. However, negotiations over wages, benefits, and a two-tier pay model remain contentious. The Teamsters have submitted their economic proposal to UPS and are seeking significant increases. UPS must be cautious about passing on added labor costs to the Teamsters, as it could lose business to FedEx, which is transforming itself into a lower-cost service provider. The current contract expires on July 31, and the union has threatened to strike if their demands are not met.
