Trump asks Supreme Court to end Syrian TPS protections
The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to lift a New York judge’s injunction and proceed with ending temporary protected status for Syrians, a move that could also affect TPS protections for other countries as lawsuits unfold. About 6,100 Syrians hold TPS, and ending it could cut their work authorizations and raise deportation risk for the roughly 800 with pending applications. TPS was created in 1990 to shield people from countries in crisis; Syrians received TPS in 2012, and DHS has since moved to revoke protections. A federal judge delayed the termination, and the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals left that delay in place. The government argues DHS can grant or revoke TPS without judicial interference, with a response due by March 4.
