"Surge in Tuberculosis Cases Raises Concern in US"
The number of tuberculosis cases in the US in 2023 reached the highest level in a decade, with more than 9,600 cases reported, marking a 16% increase from 2022. Factors contributing to this surge include a rise in TB cases internationally, increases in migration and post-pandemic international travel, and other illnesses weakening the immune system. While the US has a lower rate of new TB cases than most countries, efforts to prevent and treat TB are facing challenges such as flat federal funding, antibiotic shortages, and drug-resistant TB infections.
