San Jose Mayors Fight for MLB Franchise, Challenge Giants and MLB

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan has reiterated his plea for a Major League Baseball team in his city, taking a swipe at neighboring cities San Francisco and Oakland in the process. Mahan and a group of former San Jose mayors sent a letter to MLB, asking Commissioner Rob Manfred to consider an expansion club in the area, but this would require lifting the San Francisco Giants' territorial rights restriction. Mahan highlighted San Jose's larger population and lower crime rates compared to San Francisco and Oakland as reasons why his city should be considered. So far, there has been no public response from MLB or the Giants.

The Controversial Move: Oakland A's Head to Las Vegas.

Former A's co-owner Lew Wolff and local officials blame the San Francisco Giants for playing a significant role in driving the A's out of the Bay Area if they move to Las Vegas. The Giants blocked the A's efforts to move to San Jose by claiming territorial rights, which belonged to the Giants, and suing the city. The Giants also opposed the A's moving to the South Bay, suggesting it was home to a good portion of their fans and would violate their territorial rights. The A's lost approximately $175 million from 2017 through 2024 due to not receiving full revenue sharing, which is a reason for their low payrolls and decisions against keeping core players.
