Kosovo war-crimes verdict sparks protests as Thaçi sentenced to 25 years

Kosovo’s Kosovo Specialist Chambers convicted former president Hashim Thaçi and three KLA leaders of war crimes from the 1998-99 conflict, sentencing Thaçi to 25 years (Krasniqi 25, Selimi 13, Veseli 18) and acquitting them of crimes against humanity; the ruling provoked protests and clashes near EULEX in Prishtina and at the Hague, with supporters decrying the verdict as political and vowing appeals, while Serb and Kosovar leaders expressed mixed reactions.

Thaçi Given 25-Year Sentence for War Crimes by Hague Panel

Kosovo’s former president Hashim Thaçi was convicted by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague on four counts of war crimes (murder, torture, cruel treatment, arbitrary detention) and sentenced to 25 years, alongside three other ex-KLA leaders: Jakup Krasniqi (25 years), Rexhep Selimi (13 years) and Kadri Veseli (18 years). Four charges of crimes against humanity were rejected. The three-year trial saw all four defendants plead not guilty, with appeals possible; the court stressed the case was about war crimes during Kosovo’s independence struggle, not the legitimacy of the KLA.
