TheWrap and The Atlantic criticize the new film 'The Brink of War' for presenting a shallow, one-sided view of the 1986 Reykjavik Summit, praising the performances of Jeff Daniels and Jared Harris but faulting the script for mythologizing Reagan and ignoring historical nuance.
Angel Studios released 'The Brink of War,' a 1986 Reykjavik Summit drama starring Jeff Daniels as Ronald Reagan, on August 14, 2026. The film, directed by Michael Russell Gunn, portrays Reagan as an unyielding 'Crusader' who outmaneuvers Mikhail Gorbachev. Critics and audiences are divided: while the film holds a 71% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, AV Club calls it a dull, repetitive hagiography that ignores historical nuance. The release marks the latest in a series of conservative-leaning films from the crowd-funded studio, including 'Young Washington' and 'Animal Farm.'
