Google's AI Weather Forecast Model Outperforms Conventional Methods, Study Shows
A new computer model developed by Google and powered by artificial intelligence (AI) has shown superior accuracy and speed compared to traditional government weather models. The AI model, named "GraphCast," outperformed the widely regarded "European model" and demonstrated better accuracy in predicting day-to-day weather and extreme events such as hurricanes. The model was trained on 40 years of historical data and can generate a 10-day forecast in less than a minute. While AI weather models show promise, experts caution that they are not yet ready to replace traditional forecasting methods and face challenges in predicting smaller-scale phenomena and gaining trust from meteorologists.
