Reviving Ancient Chinese Skywells: A Sustainable Solution for Cool Homes

Ancient Chinese architectural design features known as "skywells" are being revived in modern buildings in China to reduce the need for air conditioning and cut down on carbon emissions. Skywells are square or rectangular courtyards with stone walls and dou gong eaves that funnel rainwater into a central basin. The design creates natural ventilation and circulation, cooling the interior temperatures by up to 9.5°F (4.3°C). The revival of these traditional principles aligns with a government initiative for greener buildings and offers aesthetic beauty and pleasant climate for various activities. The skywell design is not limited to homes but can also be incorporated into larger structures for better ventilation and temperature control.
