Spaceflight requires enormous fuel because the payload-to-fuel ratio follows the Tsiolkovsky equation, so engineers continuously seek to reduce mass and optimize launch conditions. Launching from mountains offers only marginal altitude benefits and is often not cost-effective due to logistics. The biggest performance boost comes from launching near the equator, leveraging Earth’s spin—especially for geostationary-orbit missions—while polar or inclined orbits gain less from equatorial sites. Practically, site choice balances physics with logistics and cost, so most launch sites are at mid to low latitudes and launch eastward to ride Earth's rotation.
