Scientists from Imperial College London and international partners have found that ketamine, commonly known as a party drug and anesthetic, may have the potential to kill cancer cells in laboratory settings. The drug appears to suppress the growth and spread of lung and brain cancer cells by blocking the NMDA receptor, which is involved in tumor growth. While the results are promising, they are preliminary and further research, including in-depth studies with cancer patients, is necessary before considering ketamine as a viable cancer treatment. The findings do not guarantee the same effects in humans, and the use of ketamine remains regulated due to its potential side effects and abuse as a recreational drug.
