The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) has filed a lawsuit against Mayor Adams' administration to prevent the proposed $2 billion budget cuts to New York City public schools. The UFT argues that the cuts are illegal under state law and that they violate provisions that require new state education funding to supplement, not replace, local spending. The revised municipal budget would reduce the city Education Department's funding by $547 million this year, with larger cuts in subsequent years. Mayor Adams attributes the cuts to the costs associated with the migrant crisis. The UFT's legal action follows a similar lawsuit by the city's largest municipal union, DC 37.
