The Mental Health Impact of Unintended Fatherhood

A new study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders reveals that unintended pregnancies can have a significant impact on the mental health of new fathers. The research found that men who experienced unintended births were more than twice as likely to face mental health difficulties, including depression, anxiety, stress, and even PTSD, compared to those with planned pregnancies. The effects were observed not only in the immediate postpartum period but also up to a year after the birth. The study emphasizes the need for increased awareness and support for fathers dealing with the emotional challenges of unintended fatherhood, highlighting the importance of screening fathers and partners for adverse mental health outcomes.

FDA Advisers Unanimously Support Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pill

FDA advisory panels have unanimously recommended making the birth control pill, Opill, available over the counter without a prescription, despite concerns about the quality of data used to support the switch. If approved, Opill would be the first birth control pill available for over-the-counter sales in the United States. Advocacy groups have been pushing for years for an over-the-counter birth control pill, and many major medical organizations support over-the-counter use. HRA Pharma, the French drugmaker behind Opill, said making birth control over the counter could prevent more than 37,000 unintended pregnancies in one year.
