UAW Files Labor Complaint Against Sen. Tim Scott Over 'You Strike, You're Fired' Remark
The United Auto Workers (UAW) has filed a labor complaint against Senator Tim Scott for suggesting that striking workers should be fired. The complaint accuses Scott's presidential campaign of interfering with workers' rights to engage in union activity. Scott had referenced former President Ronald Reagan's firing of striking air traffic controllers in 1981 as an example to follow. The UAW president called Scott's comments a threat to employees' protected, concerted activity. Scott responded by criticizing the UAW and accusing them of trying to intimidate him. South Carolina, where Scott is from, has a strong anti-union reputation. The UAW is currently on strike at key plants, and the union plans to expand the strike to additional locations.
