OpenAI Frees Up ChatGPT Texting in 2026, but With Model and Feature Hurdles
OpenAI announced that free and Go-tier ChatGPT users can send unlimited text messages starting mid-August 2026, while limits still apply to image generation and file uploads. The free tier is restricted to the GPT-5.6 Luna model with a single reasoning mode; access to other GPT-5.6 models requires a paid plan. Free users get web search, image generation, a 500MB Upload Library, and basic voice mode (via the small Live-1 mini model). Codex and Work tools are available but limited. Ads may appear for free users, and by default your data may be used for training unless you opt out in Settings under Data Controls.
