New bodycam footage from the aftermath of the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust has been released, showing actor Alec Baldwin speaking to police and admitting he was holding the gun. The footage emerged on the first day of the trial in Santa Fe, where armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed denies charges of involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence.
Smaller, everyday incidents of gun violence, rather than mass shootings, account for a majority of firearms deaths and injuries in the US. An average of 50 people die each day in the United States from non-suicide gun incidents, and roughly 100 are injured. Black people die due to firearms at higher rates than any other racial or ethnic group in the US. The shootings take place against a backdrop of increasingly polarised debates over access to and use of guns in the United States. As of 20 April 2023, 12,719 people have died so far this year in gun violence incidents.
