Gavi Board approves $1.8 billion for African vaccine manufacturing and pandemic preparedness
Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has approved the establishment of the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA), which will provide up to $1 billion to support sustainable vaccine manufacturing in Africa. The Board also approved a $500 million First Response Fund to ensure immediate financing for future pandemic responses, as well as funding to help countries close routine immunization gaps caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the Board approved the inclusion of a new multivalent meningococcal vaccine in Gavi's portfolio and confirmed a shortlist of new vaccines for Gavi's next Vaccine Investment Strategy. France and Africa CDC will co-host a high-level event in June 2024 to officially launch AVMA and Gavi's investment case for its next replenishment.
