Neurons in the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) of the human brain encode key computations for value-based decision-making, particularly during exploration and uncertainty. The pre-SMA neurons were found to represent the novelty bonus, which is the increased value of information gained from exploring a new option, and to integrate this information with the expected value of the options. These findings suggest that the pre-SMA plays a crucial role in balancing exploration and exploitation during decision-making.
