Victorian Court Rules Prisoner’s Vegemite Ban Is Legitimate Security Measure
A Victorian Supreme Court judge has rejected a prisoner’s legal challenge to a ban on Vegemite in state prisons. Andre McKechnie, a life-sentence inmate, argued that denying him the spread violated his human right to enjoy Australian culture. Justice Claire Harris ruled that while the ban limits cultural rights, it is a proportionate and justified measure to prevent the brewing of alcohol and to ensure drug-detection dogs can function effectively. The court dismissed claims that the ban caused the prisoner’s emotional distress or nutritional deficiency, noting that his imprisonment, not the absence of the condiment, was the primary cause of his isolation.
