"Google Chrome Drops Theora Video Codec Support"

Google engineers are deprecating and removing support for Theora, an open-source video compression format, from their Chrome/Chromium web browser. Theora's declining usage, increasing security risks, and lack of support from Safari and Chrome on Android have led to this decision. The support will be disabled for users gradually over the next few months, with complete removal planned for Chrome 123 in March. Theora, first released in 2004, has seen its usage fall below detectable levels and was incorrectly preferred over more modern codecs like VP9.
