South Korea's Innovative Solutions to Social Isolation and Fertility Crisis
South Korea's Ministry of Gender Equality and Family has passed a measure to offer a monthly living allowance of $490 to reclusive youths, as well as education, job and health support, in order to encourage them out of their homes. The condition is known as "hikikomori", and the government wants to make it easier for those experiencing it to leave the house to go to school, university or work. The new measures aim to strengthen government support "to enable reclusive youth to recover their daily lives and reintegrate into society".
