Air Quality Disparities Revealed in Salt Lake City's West Side Environmental Justice Report
A preliminary report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reveals that several neighborhoods on Salt Lake City's west side, including Westpointe, Jordan Meadows, Poplar Grove, Glendale, Fairpark, and Rose Park, experience disproportionate pollution and health risks due to their proximity to major transportation routes and industrial activities. These neighborhoods have higher asthma burdens, increased cancer risks, and lower life expectancies compared to the east side of the city. The report comes amid concerns about the potential impact of the Utah Inland Port on air quality. While the EPA can issue grants, the primary authority to enforce clean air standards lies with the states. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and other officials encouraged residents to petition lawmakers for action and express their concerns in legislative meetings.
